How to Export a GEDCOM File

Select your genealogy software below to see step-by-step instructions on how to create the .ged file needed for your chart.

  1. Go to File > Export Data (or File > Export > GEDCOM).
  2. Select GEDCOM File and click Export.
  3. Ensure "Privatize Living People" is UNCHECKED if you want living relatives to appear.
  4. Save the file to your Desktop.

  2. In the export window, click the drop-down menu and select GEDCOM 5.5.1.
  3. Select "Entire File" (or specific individuals).
  4. Important: Uncheck "Privatize living people" to include them on the chart.
  5. Click OK and save to your computer.

  1. Go to File > Export > GEDCOM File.
  2. Click "Select File Name" and choose a save location.
  3. Click the Privacy tab and ensure "Override Private Settings" is selected if you want all names to appear.
  4. Click Start Export.

  1. Go to Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File.
  2. Choose the records you want to include (usually "All").
  3. Save the file. Note: Family Historian files are often already in GEDCOM format, but this ensures a clean export.

  1. Go to File > Export.
  2. Select GEDCOM as the file type.
  3. Ensure the "Export Key" (Privacy) settings allow living people if desired.
  4. Click Export.

Pro Tip: Most genealogy websites (Ancestry, MyHeritage) also allow you to "Export Tree as GEDCOM" from their settings menu.
