How to Export a GEDCOM File
Select your genealogy software below to see step-by-step instructions on how to create the .ged file needed for your chart.
- Go to File > Export Data (or File > Export > GEDCOM).
- Select GEDCOM File and click Export.
- Ensure "Privatize Living People" is UNCHECKED if you want living relatives to appear.
- Save the file to your Desktop.
- Go to File > Export.
- In the export window, click the drop-down menu and select GEDCOM 5.5.1.
- Select "Entire File" (or specific individuals).
- Important: Uncheck "Privatize living people" to include them on the chart.
- Click OK and save to your computer.
- Go to File > Export > GEDCOM File.
- Click "Select File Name" and choose a save location.
- Click the Privacy tab and ensure "Override Private Settings" is selected if you want all names to appear.
- Click Start Export.
- Go to Import/Export > Export > GEDCOM File.
- Choose the records you want to include (usually "All").
- Save the file. Note: Family Historian files are often already in GEDCOM format, but this ensures a clean export.
- Go to File > Export.
- Select GEDCOM as the file type.
- Ensure the "Export Key" (Privacy) settings allow living people if desired.
- Click Export.
Pro Tip: Most genealogy websites (Ancestry, MyHeritage) also allow you to "Export Tree as GEDCOM" from their settings menu.
